In recent years, the advent of cutting-edge technologies in the field of neuroscience, exemplified by Elon Musk’s creation, Neuralink, has opened new frontiers in the potential for seamless interaction between the human brain and advanced machines. While many are looking forward to such advancements, many believe such creations are heralding a future where the boundaries between biological and artificial intelligence may begin to blur.
NeuraLink began in 2016 with Elon Musk and a group of engineers after receiving more than AUS$235 million in funding. The start-up created a tiny computer chip interface that would be implanted into the skull and connect the brain to a computer. This chip would process neural signals from the brain and transmit them to tech devices and operate them. The purpose of this technology is to allow people to operate their technological devices using just their thoughts. Musk is also hoping that Neuralink could develop to be a cure for paralysis, blindness, and mental illnesses. (Neuralink: What Is It and Can It Cure Paralysis and Blindness?, n.d.)
But how would this technology work? Neuralink will utilize tiny electrodes to connect the human brain to a computer and is essentially a brain-computer interface (BCI) . These electrodes will be inserted into the brain with a surgical procedure that is done by a robot. Afterwards, the device is connected to a computer, enabling the communication between the brain and the machine. As complex as this technology seems, it’s already advancing quite quickly with human trials having begun on September, 19, 2023 and FDA approval being granted. As with any groundbreaking technology, Neuralink hasn’t escaped its fair share of controversy and criticism. Skepticism and ethical concerns against Neuralink technology is very common, as people question the potential misuse of neurotechnology and invasion of privacy. And it is quite evident that Neuralink stands at the intersection of scientific marvels and ethical concerns.
The promise of revolutionizing healthcare and technology is undeniable, but so are the concerns of doing so. This device requires a thoughtful and balanced approach, acknowledging both the ethical considerations that come in hand with pushing the boundaries of neuroscience and technology.
